Founded in 1996 in Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic, Opera de las Américas is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promote
opera in all its manifestations from the production of repertoire opera to contemporary
and commissioned works to the development of new singers and new audiences in the
Caribbean.
Opera de las Américas' first production, "Homenaje a Verdi" was awarded the
coveted "Casandra" prize for best production of the year 1997 and our first
"Taller para Jóvenes Cantantes" (Opera Studio) followed with the same success
and acclaim from all sectors of the Dominican Republic and abroad.
1998 saw our first "Baile de la Opera" (Opera Ball) take place and was credited
as the best spectacle ever presented in the 25 years of existence of our Teatro Nacional:
a production including a "collage" of staged opera, operetta and zarzuela
numbers, preceded the opening of the stage and back-stage areas, decorated as a grand
ballroom, where the audience was then ushered to these areas. A Grand Dinner was served
followed by the Grand Ball of the Opera. The melodies of Viennesse waltzes opened the ball
in which the famous dominican "Merengue" was also heard.
The 2nd "Taller para Jóvenes Cantantes y Directores de Orquesta" completed our
1998 season.
1999 will take us to our presentations of the operas "Aida", by Giuseppe Verdi.
While 2000 will bring us a new opera by composer Manuel González.
